1. Calculate from actual average bitrate
Camera count and resolution alone are not enough to size an NVR. Use the average recorded bitrate in Mbps per camera from your codec, frame rate, scene complexity, and recording schedule.
Decimal TB required = cameras × average Mbps × days × 0.0108 × recording fraction.
The formula uses 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes and 1 day = 86,400 seconds. Recording fraction is 1.0 for continuous recording; 0.5 means an assumed 50% average recording duty cycle. Motion recording savings are not guaranteed.
Worked examples: continuous recording, 30 days
| Cameras | Average Mbps / camera | Raw video TB | +15% planning allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 3 | 7.78 TB | 8.94 TB |
| 16 | 4 | 20.74 TB | 23.85 TB |
| 32 | 4 | 41.47 TB | 47.69 TB |
Examples are illustrative, not hardware recommendations. The allowance is a planning assumption, not a guarantee of retention. Disk manufacturer capacity, filesystem overhead, recorder reservations, metadata and configuration affect usable storage.
Before buying disks, check these five items
- Measured bitrate: use representative day/night footage; H.264 vs H.265, VBR, frame rate and motion change average Mbps.
- Recording schedule: continuous vs event-only; test motion detection under actual conditions.
- Usable capacity: RAID parity, hot spares, NVR system space and any recorder-specific restrictions reduce available TB.
- Recorder limits: supported disk size, number of bays, SATA/NAS compatibility, camera count and incoming bandwidth.
- Verification: after commissioning, confirm the oldest accessible recording date and monitor retention over time.
Example: 16 cameras × 4 Mbps × 30 days × 0.0108 = 20.736 TB of video data. At a 15% planning allowance, the estimate becomes 23.8464 TB before RAID and other usable-capacity deductions.

|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 3 | 7.78 TB | 8.94 TB |
| 16 | 4 | 20.74 TB | 23.85 TB |
| 32 | 4 | 41.47 TB | 47.69 TB |
Verificaciones necesarias
